As you’d expect from our proximity to the National Centre of sporting excellence, we take our Sports very seriously. From expert coaching through to our absolutely fabulous facilities, there is everything at Loughborough for both the elite or highly promising young sportsman to the schoolboy who wishes to play games or enjoy activities without competing at the highest level.
The major sports are rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis, athletics and cross country. The magnificent 1st XI cricket pitch is within the school campus as is the 27 yard heated indoor swimming pool, an all-weather astro-turf pitch for hockey and courts for squash, tennis and badminton. Beyond this is one of the jewels of our school – ‘Quorn’ – an enormous 70 acre site some ten minutes from our main buildings and home to so much of our sports training, competitions and inter-school rivalries.
Naturally we are extremely proud of our sporting record and achievements. Across the spectrum we enjoy a national reputation for producing teams and individuals who are either winners or regarded as somewhat tough to beat! Each year numerous students win county honours across a broad range of sports and several have gone on to represent the country. Most recently, our teams have contested National finals in both cricket and tennis.
Yet none of this does justice to the sheer breadth of our activities. Either at Quorn or within our magnificent Sports Hall, we have facilities for basketball, canoeing, climbing, fencing, football, golf, sailing, shooting, table tennis and even water polo. That’s not to mention our fully equipped fitness gymnasium with its free and fixed weights and cardiovascular equipment.
Sport at its best demands skill and art as well as strength, courage and competitiveness. We enjoy our frequent successes yet we also pay tribute to the creativity and co-operative work of all our teams – whatever the outcome.
