Girl Trouble
Girl Trouble
The latest French play from the Onatti Theatre Company had a "lesson for life" for the boys of Years 9, 10 and 11. Jean-Paul was a 16 year old boy desperately hoping to find a girlfriend. Inexplicably, a super heroine, Fashion Girl, appeared from the back of his wardrobe, in a variety of guises, offering advice on fashion, diet, hobbies and music. Though all the advice seemed to be outrageous and contradictory, the end result was a great success when Jean-Paul finally met up with Angélique, the girl of his dreams.

Ski Time
Ski Time
February Half Term means ski trips and this year's Senior Course took place at Alpe d'Huez. Snow in abundance meant that it was fun time on skis for all during the day and fun activities in the evening, such as ice-skating by moonlight. Throw in bum-boarding, cafes and the superb Alpine special restaurant dinner – raclette, fondue, pierrade – and a splendid time was guaranteed for all.
March Past
March Past
A contingent of our CCF cadets paraded on the A6 to welcome the Coldstream Guards who are recreating the march from Berwick upon Tweed to London of the original Guards and their first leader General George Monck. 350 years ago a 1,000 strong army marched south, at a pace of 25 miles per day, to persuade Parliament to restore the monarchy after the civil War. The present-day marchers are raising money for the Army Benevolent Fund, and have so far braved the blizzards of the Scottish borders and the snow drifts of the Yorkshire moors.

As part of LGS's participation in the Charnwood Community Achievement Awards, 55 boys and girls from Sacred Heart and Mountfield Lodge primary schools attended a Road Safety Awareness morning. They enjoyed a range of activities, from investigating an accident scene, deftly created by our VIth Form theatre studies students, to eggy experiments on seatbelts and stopping distances, to ICT web games from Tales of the Road. They were guided around this morning of fun by some of our enthusiastic Year 9 drama students, all of whom seemed to have a cracking good time.
- LGS added a new international sportsman to the school’s role of honour when Sam Russell (Year 13) represented England Independent Schools at football in a match against Australia Schools. Played at Nantwich Town’s ground in torrential rain, the match result was disappointing, a 4-0 defeat, but the occasion was memorable, and Sam is looking forward to more international honours.
Quad Trees
Facelift for the Quad
The time has come, sadly, to say goodbye to the cherry trees that have graced the Quad for so many years producing their wonderful display of vibrant colours in April and May. Unfortunately, over the past few years, many of them have succumbed to disease and several have already had to be removed. All is not lost, however, and replacements have been carefully nurtured and are at this minute being planted so that in a few years time the Quad will once again burst into blossom to welcome the Summer Term.
Helping Haiti
Helping Haiti
The response to the disaster in Haiti has been tremendous. Boys at LGS have come up with countless ideas for fundraising, including Cake Sales, Football tournaments, Sponsored silences (the teachers' favourite) and many more. The money is still being counted, but it is expected to run into several thousands of pounds. For more pictures of the events, click

Net minder James Hadfield (LGS Year 12) has been selected to represent Great Britain with the U18's Ice Hockey team at the IIHF World championships in Poland during April of this year. He is currently playing for Sheffield Steelhawks, the team he helped to win last year's National Championship. They are mid way through the season and still unbeaten. James trains in Sheffield three times a week with games taking place most weekends from September to May.
Keep on Running
Keep on Running
The school cross country runners rounded off the Leicestershire League Season in fine style - especially the Year 7 and Junior (Year 8 and 9) boys who completed a fantastic sequence of 5 straight wins. The Intermediate team also qualified as one of the country's top 24 teams for the National Championships, held in Newquay, though, sadly, their final position was spoilt by an injury during the race to Andy Halliwell. Hopes are high for next year as 4 of the 5 boys will still be eligible.
60 Years On
60 Years On
The Diamond Jubilee of rugby in the school was celebrated when 100 former 1st XV rugby players, including several of the first team that played Burton Grammar School in 1949, returned for luncheon followed by the 1st XV fixture against St Peter's School, York. Much of the time was spent reminiscing – especially on the double-decker bus to the playing fields to watch the game. For 38 of those years Mr C.L.Davies was involved in coaching and the Old Boys Association took the opportunity to present him with a signed ball and a cheque in appreciation of his contribution to the development of the game…from 1 team and 15 players in 1949 to 16 teams and 300 players now.
