One Thousand A Grades

In another outstanding year LGS pupils achieved a massive 1011 'A' or 'A*' grades between them. Several boys managed to gain 'A*' across the board giving them up to 12 top grades. Statistics of course can tell us anything but when 'A*' was the most awarded grade for LGS pupils this year with 'A' being the second most awarded grade it surely proves the hard work put in has really paid dividends for the year 11 students this year.

Boys do Read

50 Librarians and English Staff from boys' schools all over England attended a one day conference at the school to discuss the complex challenge of how to get boys to read. Sir Andrew Motion – poet laureate 1999-2009 – gave the key note address reflecting on his time at an all boys' school, Radley College, as well as reading some of his latest work. He was joined by the local Author, Michael Cox, who worked with two forms of junior boys, watched by the delegates. The conference started with a presentation by LGS boys of the school's 'Book of the Year' project, which has already been adopted by other member schools of the International Boys' Schools Coalition around the world.

Almost unbelievably, for the 5th consecutive year, a Loughborough Grammar School pupil has been chosen for the prestigious award of a place at the training camp at Trinity College, Cambridge, which prepares the best young mathematicians in Britain for the International Mathematical Olympiad. This year's star is Matei Mandache, whose achievement is all the more remarkable because he is only aged 15, and is competing with students who are several years older.

GO Champs

The LGS Go team of Tien, Matei and Bosco won all their games in the British Schools championship to comfortably retain their national title. This was no great surprise as Tien, although only 15, is also the British schools champion, having not lost a school game for two years. He has also been part of the British Go squad that went to Japan and received special coaching last October. For an explanation of the game....

Girl Trouble

The latest French play from the Onatti Theatre Company had a "lesson for life" for the boys of Years 9, 10 and 11. Jean-Paul was a 16 year old boy desperately hoping to find a girlfriend. Inexplicably, a super heroine, Fashion Girl, appeared from the back of his wardrobe, in a variety of guises, offering advice on fashion, diet, hobbies and music. Though all the advice seemed to be outrageous and contradictory, the end result was a great success when Jean-Paul finally met up with Angélique, the girl of his dreams.

Colossal Journey

Not the coach trip to Bletchley park undertaken by our ‘A’ Level computer scientists but the rebuilt Colossus now housed in the original home of British Cryptography and code breaking at Bletchley Park. The Colossus was dismantled after the war and remained a state secret until 1979. Rebuilt by Tony Sale over a fifteen year period the Colossus MKII is again fully functional and an amazing feat of dedication, engineering and electronics.

We were privileged to meet Tony Sale himself, who gave us a talk and a demonstration of the Colossus machine. We also enjoyed a guided tour of the computer museum and a demonstration by LGS Old Boy Peter Onion of the Elliot 803B computer which is the same as the first computer to be installed in the school in P4 in the early 1970s

The National Gallery and Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre were the destinations for the Year 13 English students on their cultural visit to London. After a guided tour of the Gallery and an illustrated talk on the Pastoral in Art, the group crossed the Thames where they stood in the sun, in the Globe's authentic surroundings, to enjoy As you Like It.
