Heroic Effort
Boys and girls of Year 9 braved the stifling heat and the potential for acute embarrassment at the Year 9 Disco held recently in the Hodson Hall. The proceeds from the evening will go to Help for Heroes, and the total raised is over £550.

Which Way?
Contrasting weather conditions made the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions very different – heavy snow forced the Gold practice to use the low level routes in the Lake District, whereas two weeks later in Derbyshire, the Silver boys enjoyerd perfect weather and very few got lost!

Volcano Disaster
The LGS Classics trip encountered at close quarters the devastation caused by volcanic ash and magma. Not the recent event in Iceland – but a much more catastrophic eruption nearly 2000 years ago. Mr Pollock led his intrepid group into the craters of Vesuvius and Solfatara – the menacing volcanic peaks which overlook the Bay of Naples – before visiting Pompeii, the city frozen in time by the dreaded ash in 79AD. Happily, the rest of the trip was more relaxing – the pizza, pasta and ice cream were delicious!

Ere we Go
Seven RAF cadets have completed their training and made a static line parachute jump at RAF Weston-on-the-Green, near Oxford. The course consisted of 6 hours ground training and a descent from 3,500 feet. Those who withstood the rigours of the training and successfully completed the course were Ed Foxall, Alistair Fell, Ben Vincent, James Raikes, Christian Darnell, Sarveen Gajebasia and Sam Collington. All seven are now able to progress towards freefall skydiving, having mastered the basic elements of exiting the aircraft, dealing with malfunctions and steering and landing the canopy.

Ski Time
February Half Term means ski trips and this year's Senior Course took place at Alpe d'Huez. Snow in abundance meant that it was fun time on skis for all during the day and fun activities in the evening, such as ice-skating by moonlight. Throw in bum-boarding, cafes and the superb Alpine special restaurant dinner – raclette, fondue, pierrade – and a splendid time was guaranteed for all.

March Past
A contingent of our CCF cadets paraded on the A6 to welcome the Coldstream Guards who are recreating the march from Berwick upon Tweed to London of the original Guards and their first leader General George Monck. 350 years ago a 1,000 strong army marched south, at a pace of 25 miles per day, to persuade Parliament to restore the monarchy after the civil War. The present-day marchers are raising money for the Army Benevolent Fund, and have so far braved the blizzards of the Scottish borders and the snow drifts of the Yorkshire moors.

Clunk Click
As part of LGS's participation in the Charnwood Community Achievement Awards, 55 boys and girls from Sacred Heart and Mountfield Lodge primary schools attended a Road Safety Awareness morning. They enjoyed a range of activities, from investigating an accident scene, deftly created by our VIth Form theatre studies students, to eggy experiments on seatbelts and stopping distances, to ICT web games from Tales of the Road. They were guided around this morning of fun by some of our enthusiastic Year 9 drama students, all of whom seemed to have a cracking good time.

Spanish Homestay

Sunny Spain
The Spanish Homestay trip to Valencia enjoyed almost unbroken sunshine, even when the rest of Spain was under torrential rain. The boys enjoyed useful Spanish classes before spending the afternoons and evenings on a number of excursions and activities which gave a taste of Spanish culture and everyday life. Visits ranged from the bullring to the Mestalla stadium, home of Valencia FC; from the old city to the futuristic new port; with paella, treasure hunts and beach football.
