Sports Day
The athletes were welcomed to Quorn by glorious sunshine for sports day on Sat 3rd July. The bone dry track made for some exceptionally fast times in the sprint events, although it did mean the distance runners were left gasping for air after their events. The PA refreshment tent did a roaring trade and kept the athletes and the crowd going to the end.

Monday 28 June saw the School's 1st XI complete a remarkable run of four successive victories against the MCC. Chasing a daunting total of 271 for 3, the opening batsmen set about their task in fine style and established a springboard for a remarkable third wicket partnership which saw Joe Purvis craft a fine innings of 115 and Jack Williamson remain undefeated on 102 at the close. The 272 runs needed for victory were eventually knocked off with 7 wickets in hand.

As one of the top five U14 tennis players in the country, Chris recently spent 2 weeks in Slovenia competing for Team GB in two 'Tennis Europe' tournaments which attracted the top players from across the continent. In the first, he reached the last 16 in the singles and he and his partner were narrowly beaten by the top seeds in the final of the doubles. In the second, he reached the quarter finals in both singles and doubles, in each case losing out to the eventual finalists. In spite of all this, Chris is now looking forward to representing the school at Independent Schools Tennis Championships in July.

Double Up
The LGS football team completed the League and Cup double with an emphatic 3-0 win over Oundle in the rearranged LB Cup Final, which complemented their 1st place finish in the Independent Schools' Mercian League.
Loughborough totally dominated the first half of the Final and went ahead through left winger Max Turner after 13 minutes. Coming in from the left he pushed his shot clinically just inside the far post. The lead was increased on 23 minutes by an opportunist finish from striker Dom Thelen.
The match was effectively finished 15 minutes into the second half when Dom Thelen reacted quickest in the goal area to flick a left footed finish into the net. Oundle put up a spirited fightback but LGS goalkeeper Alex Nathanson was in fine form as was the centre back partnership of the outstanding Tom Hayes and captain Sam Russell.

LGS defeated last year's cup winners Ivanhoe School in a very competitive match to win the County Under 14 championship. LGS started well and proceeded to dominate both territory and possession. Try scorers were Elliott Cant, Rory Liggins and Tom Johnson. Harry Mitchell kicked 2 conversions and a penalty. Man of the match Danny Murty secured a steady supply of 'turnover ball' though the team as a whole performed extremely well to round off a successful season in real style.

The school cross country runners rounded off the Leicestershire League Season in fine style - especially the Year 7 and Junior (Year 8 and 9) boys who completed a fantastic sequence of 5 straight wins. The Intermediate team also qualified as one of the country's top 24 teams for the National Championships, held in Newquay, though, sadly, their final position was spoilt by an injury during the race to Andy Halliwell. Hopes are high for next year as 4 of the 5 boys will still be eligible.

60 Years On
The Diamond Jubilee of rugby in the school was celebrated when 100 former 1st XV rugby players, including several of the first team that played Burton Grammar School in 1949, returned for luncheon followed by the 1st XV fixture against St Peter's School, York. Much of the time was spent reminiscing especially on the double-decker bus to the playing fields to watch the game. For 38 of those years Mr C.L.Davies was involved in coaching and the Old Boys Association took the opportunity to present him with a signed ball and a cheque in appreciation of his contribution to the development of the game from 1 team and 15 players in 1949 to 16 teams and 300 players now.

On a Roll
Following on from last year's momentous season, the 1st XI Hockey team are once again on a roll. Against a determined Bishop Vesey XI and in inclement weather, they cruised to a 6 1 victory to make it five wins in a row at the start of the new season. The opposition started strongly and made LGS work for their supremacy in the first half. LGS scored very early, but the visitors soon replied and the score remained at 1 1 for some time. Eventually however LGS took control and their sharper and more decisive passing was the difference in the end. All looks set fair for another triumphant campaign

The 1st XV came so close to their first win of the season in Saturday's match versus King Edward's Birmingham. The photo shows Sam North's try in the corner after a powerful run. Followed by Fergus Liggin's conversion from the touchline, it put LGS 16 9 ahead late in the game, after the sides had swapped penalties in a hard-fought encounter. The opposition then put the home side under pressure and with the last play of the game they scored a converted try to level the scores at 16 all. The major summer sports event at the Grammar School was a three week rugby tour to Singapore and Australia. On the field there was resounding success 9 wins and only one defeat and on the social and cultural front there was outstanding fun, especially on the coast at Brisbane and on the Great Barrier Reef. In Sydney there were tours of the Opera House and the Olympic Park, as well as the scary climb to the top of the Harbour Bridge, jet boating and cruising in the bay.
