Key Stage 3

In Years 7 – 9 boys follow a broad-based curriculum covering the representation of the formal elements in Art: LINE, FORM, TONE and PERSPECTIVE, and this varied approach introduces pupils to a wide spectrum of techniques in which to explore their ideas. Throughout this key stage, researching the work of artists, both past and present, is an essential part of the course which helps to develop understanding and knowledge. Art from other cultures is studied at a basic level in Years 7 & 8, and then in more depth in Year 9. Usually in the second term of Year 8 pupils are expected to decide whether they wish to continue with the subject through to Year 9, and Art has continued to be a popular choice.

GCSE

All boys follow the OCR GCSE syllabus and the majority achieve A or A* grades, with approximately 20% achieving grade B. The course offers opportunities to improve skills and knowledge in painting techniques, printmaking and sculptural processes. Trips to London and local galleries and artistic venues, as well as workshops with practising artists, are seen as an important element of the GCSE course as this develops awareness of the subject in a broader context. The structure of the course is based around the production of a portfolio of work produced over 2 years which can contain any number of themes. There is also a controlled test of 10 hours duration. Preparation for this exam is mandatory and pupils are given papes well in advance to prepare throughly.

AS and A2

The Art department has a thriving Sixth Form and the OCR AS/AS2 syllabus is followed. This requires the production of one unit of coursework both at AS and A2, and a controlled test of 5 hours duration at AS, with 15 hours being allocated to A2. This is to allow students at A2 to produce a well researched and developed finished piece in the examination time at A2 – as the culmination of their Sixth Form studies. Initially, entry to the AS course demands that boys should achieve not less than a grade B at GCSE level as the demands of the course are rigorous and require self-motivation and commitment. At least a third of the boys regularly pursue their art interests through to Foundation and Degree level. It is expected that Sixth Form boys use the studios outside of the normal timetable for private study. In June of each year a large exhibition is organised to display the boys' work and parents and staff are invited to attend.

Extra-curricular

There are a number of clubs run after school, including ceramics and photography. Boys have gained recognition in the subject with work being displayed in the OCR Achievement Awards Exhibitions for excellence at AS/A2 level.
