Mathematics
Key Stage 3
In Years 7 to 9, boys follow a curriculum based on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics. Setting is a fairly loose arrangement in Year 7 based on the performance on the 11+ mathematics paper and primary school recommendations. Setting becomes more refined as we head to the start of the GCSE course in Year 10. Throughout Years 7 – 9 we use the Essential Mathematics textbook by David Rayner. Where appropriate the proper use of a (school supplied) scientific calculator is expected and encouraged.
GCSE
All boys follow the Edexcel iGCSE 4400 syllabus. There is no coursework component and all boys take two Higher Tier papers at the end of Year 11 which each count for 50%. Higher Tier covers grades A* to D. We expect around 80% of our boys to achieve A* or A. The text books in Years 10 and 11 are Mathematics for iGCSE (I and II) by Longman.
AS and A2
Mathematics is the largest department at Sixth Form level at Loughborough Grammar. Following excellent results in Year 11 more boys choose to take mathematics, post GCSE, than any other subject. All boys follow the Edexcel modular course. In Year 12, and for AS, boys study Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics. Most continue to A2 where they take further modules in Pure Mathematics and choose between Mechanics or Statistics in Year 13. The minimum grade requirement to start AS is a grade A or A* pass at GCSE. Further Mathematics has been an established part of the curriculum for many years. There are around 20 boys each year who opt for more challenging modules in Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Mechanics. Further Mathematicians also take Decision Maths.
For the most able, special classes are offered for those boys considering an application to the Oxbridge colleges, to study mathematics or engineering.
Extra-curricular
Maths is a thriving and popular subject within the school. Each year hundreds of boys are entered for the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Maths Challenges at Junior, Intermediate and Senior age ranges. Many boys gain recognition through Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates. We have, for a number of years, hosted and run the Primary Masterclass programme. Each month over sixty bright boys and girls from state sector primary schools visit LGS for a morning of fun and challenging activities.
We have a "puzzle club" where interesting and challenging problems are set for Junior, Intermediate and Senior boys. Chocolate prizes are an added incentive to provide the most innovative and original solutions!
For some of our own boys within the school, Mathematics can be a demanding subject. The department runs a 'Maths Surgery' at lunchtimes where boys can go to seek help from teachers or sixth formers with their classwork or homework. We also have four dedicated Learning Support teachers, within the department, who help boys individually with specific problems and learning strategies.
