Physics

Key Stage 3

In Years 7 – 9, boys are taught Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate subjects within their normal tutor groups. We follow the Physics programme of study as laid down by the National Curriculum, with an element of extra depth to account for the abilities of our pupils. A clear scheme of work is followed by all teachers in the department with regular module tests to assess progress. When possible, concepts are developed by means of practical activities. Teaching is supplemented by the use of Information Technology, including Data Logging and is supported by a library of up to date video programmes. Text books are issued to pupils. In Years 7 and 8 we use "Physics Now!" By Peter Riley and in Year 9 "Physics 11-14" by Jennifer Clifford and Gary Philpott.

GCSE

Boys choose Physics as one of their optional subjects. The majority (between 85–90%) opt to continue with the subject to GCSE. We follow the AQA GCSE Physics (4451) specification. We have organised the specification into ten modules each taking approximately half a term and therefore lasting for 5 terms altogether, giving revision time in the summer of the second year. Modules are arranged in pairs so that rotation is possible to avoid too many clashes of apparatus. A test completes each module, with a common mark scheme. Marks are converted to an approximate GCSE grade to monitor pupil progress. Two formal investigations are built into the scheme, one at the end of Year 10 and the second early in the Spring Term of Year 11. Together these constitute the coursework element of the syllabus and account for 25% of the final mark. The main textbook is "GCSE Physics" by Tom Duncan and Heather Kennet.

Final decisions about level of entry are made following the mock examinations held in January. Most pupils enter for the Higher level paper with A*/A grade success rate in excess of 60%.

AS and A2

There is a healthy take up of Physics to Advanced Level with typically 55 boys opting for the subject in Year 12. AQA Physics A specification organised into six modules over the two years. As part of Unit 6 in Year 13 the optional topic of Turning Points in Physics is undertaken. Results at both AS and A2 have been very good with around 80% of students gaining grades A or B.

For the most able additional classes are held to support Oxbridge applications and entry for the Advanced Extension Award paper.

Extra-curricular

Each year our Sixth Form Physicists enter the Physics Olympiad competition and a number qualify for the second round, gaining Bronze and Silver medals. A number of clubs are operated by the department including a Model Car club and Robot club. A Physics enhancement club has been started for Years 7 – 9 which attempts to explore the excitement of Physics by the use of appropriate DVD material. From time to time, we also host the schools' lecture organised by the Institute of Physics.
