Personal, Social & Health Education
PSHE at Loughborough is studied in every Year group including the Sixth Form. Weekly time-tabled lessons are delivered by Form Tutors, supported by Heads of Year and the Head of the PSHE department. Visiting speakers and theatre groups sometimes take a lesson for the whole Year group.
PSHE supports and seeks to foster the School ethos of promoting the all-round, not just academic, development of pupils. Topics covered are many and varied, grouped under the major categories of 'Health', 'Relationships', 'Future' and 'World'. Topics, including Citizenship issues, are re-visited, in age-appropriate ways, as pupils progress through the School.
The methods of presentation are also wide ranging. One thing pupils will not do a lot of in a PSHE lesson is writing. A topic may be introduced with a quiz, a newspaper article or a video excerpt, with a view to encouraging constructive thought and discussion amongst the group. In this way, pupils often learn as much from each other as from staff, with the useful by-product of developing the skills of listening to others, developing one's argument, respect for others' points of view and tolerance.
