Twenty one boys studying Greek or Classical Civilisation and three staff took the train down to London to visit the British Museum. A special exhibition (Defining Beauty: the body in Ancient Greek Art) filled our morning where we were able to get up close to some of the greatest and most famous pieces of Greek sculpture from ancient times. Highlights were the Diskobolos (Discus-Thrower) and the exquisite Belvedere Torso and we were all astonished by the realism and even the hyper-realism of the depictions of the ‘perfect’ human body in stone. We were also able to see some fabulous Greek pots depicting, for example, various scenes of the 12 labours of Hercales. The day was a great success and the boys behaved superbly throughout.
