On Tuesday 6 February the Loughborough Grammar School Senior Mathematics Team was in central London to compete in the National Final of the ‘Senior Team Maths Challenge’. Loughborough Grammar School was the only team from Leicestershire at the event, having qualified last term, by winning the regional heat for the county.
The four boys involved were Daniel Cropper and Jake He, both in Year 13, and Haoran Cao and Matthew Drury, who are both in Year 11. They made a strong start in the first two rounds, working together quickly and very accurately, and avoiding any strategic errors. The final two rounds were relays which consisted of the team working in pairs to take turns to answering questions. This part of the final was the most demanding, not least because of the time pressure, and the resulting need to find very efficient methods with which to solve unfamiliar maths questions, without making mistakes; these two rounds separated the teams quite widely.
Loughborough Grammar School had a strong day throughout, finishing in the top half of the teams, and gaining our second best final result in the last five years. Congratulations go to the four boys involved for competing so well mathematically, both in the regional round and again in London this week.
