On the 14th November the English Department were privileged to welcome poet, novelist, dramatist, editor, publisher, campaigner and former Poet Laureate, Sir Andrew Motion. He spent some time with an A2 English set, offering insights into a poem by Rupert Brooke and then led two exciting workshops. The first was a session with 30 boys from years 10 and 11, in which he discussed his writing career and helped the poets to write vivid and well-formed poems stimulated by a Hopper painting which some read out to the group. In the afternoon he spoke to the new AS Creative Writing group, exploring the process of writing poems, showing his notebook and again encouraging boys to write. His feedback was inspirational as well as purposeful. Our after school reading was attended by 90 pupils, staff and parents who were mesmerised by Sir Andrew’s poems, including some of the Harry Patch selection. He answered questions both about his poetry and about his novel, Silver. Many thanks to the PA for helping to make the event possible and to all the boys, staff and parents who attended or helped in the smooth running of this exciting day. Thanks too to Sir Andrew, who made a memorable impact on all who encountered him.
