Ben Dijkstra of Year 10 is certainly making a very big name for himself in the cross-country world: in the last four weeks he has notched up three national titles to add to his previous successes!
Earlier this term, as we reported, Ben finished first in the National Schools’ Cross Country Cup, essentially a team event, but since then he has gone from strength to strength. He finished first in the Inter Counties Championships, an event where every county enters its 8 best athletes, and most recently he won the English Schools Championship when competing against boys a year older than Ben. However, it is his success in the National Clubs’ Championship that surely takes pride of place. Mr Miles our Director of Cross Country and Athletics reports: “This is highly regarded by hard-core cross country men – to win ‘The Nationals’ is a big deal!”
To win one of these three titles is outstanding, but to win all three is very, very rare indeed as he beat between 250 and 400 competitors in each race. But Ben is not finished yet: on Saturday 22nd March he is competing in the Home Counties’ International in Bolton. We wish him every success.
Stop Press: Ben made it four titles in a row by winning the Home Countries’ International mentioned above and can therefore be acknowledged as British Champion. This is truly remarkable as he was again competing against runners a year older than himself.
