Vires acquirit eundo 30.06.15

Chief Guest at this year’s Junior Prize Giving was Ben James (LGS 1992-99), Mr Fisher’s first Head Boy.  After leaving LGS, Ben studied music at the University of Birmingham and then undertook classical training as an actor before working as a professional actor and musician for three years.

In 2007 he started Officer Training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.  He commissioned as one of the top officers in his intake and was selected as the top candidate for the Royal Regiment of Scotland.  He has operated in multiple theatres including the UK, Germany, Canada, Belize, The Falkland Islands, Kenya, and has completed two tours of Afghanistan.  Of note, he was awarded a Mention in Dispatches for gallantry in the Operational Honours and Awards List, March 2012, for leading his reconnaissance platoon out of a complex ambush in Helmand Province, as well as for several operations undertaken behind enemy lines. He resigned his commission in March 2015 and will shortly take up a career in institutional asset management with Baillie Gifford.

Along with his wife Victoria he presented prizes to Years 6 to 9.  Taking the School motto:  vires acquirit eundo (we gather strength as we go) as his theme, he then spoke to the boys and their parents about the values they will take with them from the School:  make excellence a habit and lead by example, values which will make you stronger as you make your way through life.
