The U14 XI are Leicestershire County Cricket Champions after a comprehensive victory against Oakham School. After losing out to the same team last year, this was a particularly satisfactory result.
Batting first, Oakham scored at over six runs per over at the start of their innings and were soon approaching the 100 mark, but two quick wickets, including the dismissal of their star opener for 70, pegged them back. Some fine, accurate bowling and excellent fielding slowed their run-rate with wickets falling at regular intervals and, in the penultimate over, Oakham were all out for 178, with Edward Chad-Smith taking four valuable wickets.
As a light drizzle fell, Charlie Royle and Ashish Trusz set about their somewhat daunting task in a careful, workmanlike way slowly establishing a solid base for the run-chase. Steadily increasing their scoring rate, they knocked off the first fifty in 14 overs accelerating to the 100 mark in the twenty second over. Charlie was out for 41 with the score at 103, but the openers had certainly laid a solid foundation. The chase continued unabated with Ashish, ably supported by Patrick Shortt who posted 23 not out, continuing on his winning way and victory was secured with some 8 overs to spare: he was 93 not out at the close.
It was a fine all-round performance, but Edward Chad-Smith’s four wickets and Ashish Trusz’ splendid innings deserve a special mention.
