Shield

Hit for six 24.06.14

The 1stXI secured a thrilling victory over the MCC at the start of the annual festival of cricket.  All of Loughborough’s bowlers bowled tightly, but, on a hot day, it was hard going on a dry, flat pitch and the visitors set an imposing total, leaving the home side chasing 242 in some 50 overs.

Danny Murty and Eben Kurtz scored freely and added 65 for the first wicket.  Rishan Chopra coming in at number 3 batted with his usual belligerence and he and Eben edged ahead of the required scoring rate.  Eben passed the hundred mark for the second time in three innings this year and, when Rishan was eventually out for 48, the target was well in reach.  It needed Eben to stay in and hearts were in mouths when he launched a straight drive out to long-on only for the catcher to step over the boundary line – six!

With three overs left Loughborough needed 7 to win and off the third and fourth balls of the 18th over, Eben drove the ball out of the ground (he is seen here hitting the winning runs) for Loughborough to finish on 247 for 4.  His final score was 146 not out:  a really great Captain’s innings.
