Biology

Ever wanted to genetically engineer bacteria to glow in UV or investigate stem cells by dissecting worms which will grow into new ones?

These are just two of the many practical experiments that Biology has to offer. The department is vibrant and long established boasting a proud tradition for preparing candidates towards careers in medicine and dentistry. For as long as we have been entering students at Advanced Level Biology, nobody has ever failed the exam!

So it is hardly surprising that we have become the most popular GCSE option choice in the School. What with cloning, genetic engineering and stem cells, not only is Biology a rapidly developing area of science, it is a wonderfully versatile subject that is equally compatible with all the environmental aspects of Geography and with many arts subjects for those students who wish to retain a scientific element in their curriculum.

Biology creates the sense of awe and wonder in everything we see around us. So at every level we make the study of Biology a stimulating learning experience. We even go beyond normal practice and in Years 7 – 9 incorporate topics that include GCSE theory or even extend beyond that! Practical work plays an important part of the lessons. Lower years may be found happily dissecting a heart. Whereas older boys may be investigating how to make better milk for lactose intolerant people or extracting their own DNA! Supporting our curriculum are clubs such as Beast Club where boys can learn all about unusual animals such as Sun beetles, Spiny mice and Xenopus toads. Biology at LGS is an experience not to be missed.
