Classics
Classicists discover those elements of Classical civilisation, literature and language which were influential in shaping our own culture. In addition, these courses provide a sound foundation for any study of other languages.
Loughborough has a thriving and successful Classics Department. All boys study Latin in Years 7 and 8, and students can elect to study Latin, Greek and Classical Civilization at every level in the curriculum. With our dedicated staff of four full-time specialists coupled with superb facilities, the majority of our students are awarded A or A* grades at GCSE and Advanced Level.
Extra-curricular activities are abundant. The department takes regular Year 8 and 9 walking trips to Hadrian's Wall and biennial trips to Italy and Greece at Easter in conjunction with the High School. Year 10 classicists enjoy a field study day for coursework at the British Museum or Bath. Also, we have hosted and always enter the EMACT Reading and Project competition and regularly attend lectures based around Nottingham University. We hold an annual Classics Day for parents who wish to renew their acquaintance with the Ancient World and often organise visits to the nearby repertory theatres and, when something appropriate opens, to London.
