Drama & Theatre Studies

Before you wonder why such an academic school offers this subject at Advanced Level, let us explain. Not only does Theatre Studies develop a balanced intellect, it is part of an excellent platform for a training in life. Taken in collaboration with a range of other subjects, Theatre Studies actively inspires boys to grow into outgoing and confident adults. The course develops their ability to work within a group and, above all, it hones those techniques that allow a chosen few to present themselves confidently to an audience.

This is a practical course aimed at introducing students to all aspects of stage drama. Whilst there is a certain amount of classroom teaching and essay writing, the emphasis is on the process of creating live drama through a hands-on approach. Most students become involved in the acting process but also need to explore other production elements including design, sound and lighting. Beyond this, they have to learn to talk and write articulately about those ideas that are expressed in dramatic form within the plays that are studied.

Indeed, there are thousands of students throughout the country who choose English and Theatre Studies as a natural combination because, contrary to opinion, there is very little overlap between the two.
