History

In sharp contrast to the widespread national decline in the teaching of this subject, History at Loughborough is a thriving and dynamic department. Our commitment to fostering a genuine passion for history is reflected in our consistent record of achieving exam successes at A* and A grades that regularly exceed Loughborough's already high averages.

In our view, History merits a crucial place within the wider curriculum. To understand past events gives boys a deeper understanding of the world today. It deepens their sense of heritage and it sharpens their ability to appreciate that whatever happens today will have consequences for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the literary skills demanded of a young historian are an important development of his education, whatever career he eventually pursues. In parallel with English Literature, pupils are taught to analyse and interpret their source material. This process broadens their imagination and heightens their capacity to develop and support strong arguments.

At junior level our pupils develop their core skills through a varied scheme of work that covers both British and World history. With our extensive ICT facilities, we take pride in our skill to make lessons both enjoyable and engaging.

At AS and A2 we offer a plethora of subject options reflecting the wide specialities of our staff. It is no accident that amongst our students who go on to read History at university, an above average proportion do so within the Russell Group.
