Drama

Appreciate and understand how we utilise Drama as a crossover within our pastoral care programmes. Our ongoing objective is to develop bright and confident boys who are distinctive as a result of a Loughborough education. Drama plays an important role in this process.

All boys from Years 6–8 inclusive are encouraged to perform on stage. This isn't quite a 3-line whip but consider what we are saying. What is shyness? Alternatively, what constitutes a lack of confidence to stand up in public and perform? Our considered policy is that these are not life and death issues but are common manifestations within that age-group. Consequently and for the benefit of building character at an early age, we attempt to nip such fears in the bud and get our pupils onto the stage as early as possible. Some are natural performers whilst others are awkward – but when the entire class does it together, this process becomes acceptable and far easier.

Loughborough has a long tradition in Drama and every boy can enjoy opportunities to become involved in productions throughout his time here, regardless of whether he is studying the subject at Advanced Level. Only a few have ambitions to act or work within the stage or TV/film industry but everyone is encouraged to participate in the basics of that profession. The focus for this involvement is our magnificent and flexible Drama Studio.

Our fully equipped studio theatre can be adapted for any event. This is a state-of-the-art space which is utilised and enjoyed throughout the school. In the hands of our own professionals we can perform anything from a lavish musical to an intimate drama in a variety of different ways – moving our audience from place to place as we wish. For such purposes it is used continuously, yet within a few moments in can become a teaching room, a lecture or concert venue or even a meeting room for Year and House assemblies. The Drama Studio is a central focus of life at Loughborough.
