As with all good things the 1st XI’s run of five successive victories against the MCC has come to an end, but not without a fight.
On a track where patience was essential and where batting was less than easy, some very tight bowling restricted the MCC’s scoring rate and they eventually declared their innings on 145 for 7, giving Loughborough some 45 overs to secure a victory. Some steady but determined batting by Danny Murty, Eben Kurtz and David Tew, against an experienced and skilful attack, put the home side in a good position, but nerves began to play a part as victory and the prescribed finishing time approached. Needing 20 to win from the last six overs and with five wickets to spare, as they say, “the wheels fell off”! A couple of run-outs did not help the cause and Loughborough’s tail finally succumbed, just a few runs short of their target.
As always against such prestigious opponents, it was a great match, but for once the 1st XI had to settle for second best.
