LES Politics Trip 2016 22.04.16

Easter saw the 5th bi-annual Politics trip to New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC. 42 girls and boys spent a hectic 6 days exploring the landmarks of US Politics that included an immediate visit to the Empire State Building and Hard Rock Café in New York before they even saw their bedrooms! The New York days were graced with beautiful sunshine for a trip on the Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and the home of US immigration at Ellis Island, before a moving visit to the newly opened (and highly recommended) 9/11 memorial and museum.

In Philadelphia, as well as partaking in the famed local delicacy of a Philly Cheesesteak at Sonny’s, students visited the birthplace of the US Constitution and Declaration of Independence before continuing on to Washington DC. Here, we began with an entertaining ghost tour around Lafayette Square in front of the White House before an excruciatingly early start to take a tour inside of US Congress, including under the famed rotunda, before hearing a lecture in the chamber of the US Supreme Court. During the afternoon, the students had some free time to explore the eighteen Smithsonian Museums on the Mall and a group of boys trekked to the Air and Space Museum to have their photograph taken with the portrait of OL Johnnie Johnson that is in this museum. The weather held for a fabulous evening of dinner at Ben’s Chili Bowl followed by a dusk tour of Washington’s famous monuments including the Lincoln Memorial.

The final full day is always popular with the Segway tour of Washington DC, which this year was especially exciting as President Obama in his motorcade passed us by. We then visited the Pentagon for the first time including a visit the 9/11 memorial there. Our departure day was no less exciting, with a morning visit to Ford’s Theatre and an opportunity to see where President Lincoln was shot, also a first for this tour, before visiting Arlington National Cemetery on the way to the airport. The students were simply outstanding, especially with the gruelling schedule we kept to fit everything in. Next stop, USA Tour 2018!
